When going into a business collaboration with someone else, there are loads of things to look out for in whoever we want to choose as our business partner in order for the business to prosper and to as well prevent misunderstandings in the near future. I'm writing this in relation to a business I ventured into with a business partner due to some differences and issues I didn't iron out or take note of before choosing, and I hope you find this helpful.
A few months after my graduation, I had some money I'd been saving up from some work I'm multitasking with alongside my schooling, and after conducting a feasibility study of one of the most booming businesses around me and you that we'll bring out high demand which I can supply, I ended up deciding to dive into the supply of food stuffs from a state where it's more plentiful and cheaper to a place where farming is rare and those items are more costly.
I dived into finding a partner because I don't have enough money to complete my projected capital, but the key mistake I made was that I knew little or nothing about business or what to look out for in a business partner. Instead, I just chose the person who had the amount of money to complete my projected capital, and that's how we began after I filled him in on all that the business is all about.
The business crumbled in no time because we obviously don't share the same goal and he was squandering all of the interest we ought to be reinvesting into the same business until we were already at a point where we could purchase a truck of our own to ease the cost of expenditure and rentage. I learned the hard way, but after a few studies, the following are what I think is better known and vetted before choosing a business partner:
-
Personal Evaluation: When choosing a business partner, it's highly important that you run a background check on the individual and know them personally to decipher what they're capable of, what they've done in the past, and how they'll handle situations. This will play a big role in case anything happens to the business along the way.
-
Trust: A business partner must be someone you've some level of trust for; although it's hard to trust someone, before you can pick someone as your business partner, you should at least be able to have the conviction that you're certain they can't do some things and the ones you feel they can do, and this will in the long run help the growth of your business and relationship.
-
Share common goal: A business partner should be one you share a common goal with, because these goals are what will be the driving force of your ventures, and when whoever you're sharing the wheel of the business with doesn't see things the way you do, then I can tell you for sure that the business is on a downward slope towards failure.
-
Financial litrate: No one should go into the sea for a swim when they have no knowledge about it; the same rules apply to business. When you do have concrete knowledge about business, you shouldn't be surprised to see yourself being washed away by the strong tide and wave of the business challenges sea.
-
Open minded: A business partner should be one who's open-minded and open to change or reason with you to see things the way you do, not just one who believes whatever they believe is the only right path that must be followed.
-
Reliability: A business partner should be someone who is reliable and trustworthy to the point where you can rest assured that they'll do the right thing or make the right decisions that help the growth of your business even in your absence, whatever the situation might be.
These and many more are some of the things you should look out for before choosing a business partner. I wish you all the best and hope this will come in handy when you need or have to choose a business partner in the near future.
