THE SILLY JOKE THAT ALMOST DENTED MY RELATIONSHIP

One of the best ways to keep friends isn't just to share wonderful ideas and opportunities with each other or to just help each other get out of difficult situations; one other way is by joking and making fun of each other and the like, and these have been acts that keep many friends together, but then there are days we get carried away and annoy our friends with some silly jokes.

Over the years, I've made many jokes with my friends, and we've all laughed about them, as have they. But then there are days that either my friends or I have gone too far with the alleged joke we made, and in such situations I've reacted in an unimpressed manner to show my dissatisfaction, as have they, and today I'd love to share one of such scenarios with y'all.

***So without taking much of your time, this write-up encompasses a point in my life when I went too far with my joke during a discussion with my ex, and the joke literally got her angry. I write this in response to the HIVE learners community prompt about the topic "jokes taken too far," and I hope you enjoy the read.***

One lovely afternoon after I closed from work a few years ago, I decided to pay my ex a visit before going home, and the purpose of my visit was to find out if she had finally been able to get the remaining sum of money required to complete her school fees since their exam was coming up in a few weeks.

On arriving at her place, I got the good news that she had finally paid her school fees and was able to get the other money from my brother and some of her friends. After that, she started talking about how disappointed she was that none of her relatives could help her, despite most of them promising to take up the mantle of sponsoring her education after her father's death. pexels-photo-8560427.jpeg

And then she went on to thank me for sacrificing most of my salary and savings to help in my little way in paying her fee, but after that speech we spoke and joked about some things, and I guess during that conservation I uttered the statement that it isn't a big deal that I rise by helping the needy and less privileged, and that literally changed the atmosphere of the room.

That joking statement made her sad, and then she started crying, saying that was like a statement made to mock her. I felt disappointed in myself and tried as much as possible to let her know it's just a joke and I don't mean what I said the way she understood it. Well, it took several minutes of pleading before she accepted that I'm only joking.

She said the statement made her remember her late dad and how he always made sure they never lacked anything when he was alive, so she said that my statement brought back the memory, but luckily she forgave me and we moved on. So in my understanding after that experience, I learned to always be mindful of our words when joking in order not to hurt the feelings we are trying to put a smile on.
