NIGERIA ISN'T ALL SHADES OF GREY

Every country in this world as one lapses or the other, and no matter how peaceful it seems from the outside, we still see her citizens grumbling for one reason or another. But despite this limitation, we've all got things that make us proud of our nation, and I for one also have several of them, even though when observing from the outside it'll seem like there isn't anything to smile about in my beloved country.

I'm from Nigeria, which is the most populated black nation in the world and also the most populated country in Africa. Among our neighboring African countries, we're regarded as the giant of Africa because there's hardly anything happening around the world that you won't find a Nigerian as part of those who were involved in it, be it positive or negative; we're always represented in most things.

Although the negative seems to have superseded the positive because most countries around the world now don't really enjoy having Nigerians in their land, and the reason for that isn't far-fetched, when you mention the word Nigerian in the ears of 1/3 of the world's population, the first thing that'll come to their mind is scammers, internet fraudsters, and drug dealers, to mention but a few, but between all these, we still have good people spread across the world who are representing us well and making the world realize Nigeria isn't all shades of black.

So with that being said, I'd love to give you some insight about some of the things I'm proud of about my country, Nigeria. Some might not seem significant to you, but to me, it's alot it meant the world to me when I think about it.

  • Immunity to most natural disasters: One of the major reasons why I'm proud of Nigeria as a country is that we, the citizens, at least have some level of safety and assurance when it comes to the possibility of not being victims of the major natural disasters that plague the world. The likes of an earthquake, hurricane, tornado, tsunami, and the like aren't things that have ever occurred and are said to have no likelihood of occurring in Nigeria. Although we're dealing with other disasters like floods, which are a result of bad weather, and we're not keeping the drainage pipes clear, I'm proud of Nigeria for this because I've seen the terrible damage this disaster caused in the various countries it hit.

  • Producer of world innovators: Nigeria is a wonderful nation that has spread its wings by producing one of the greatest geniuses in the world, who then invented devices that have been of help to many around the globe. For example, who would have believed that the world's fastest computer was invented by a Nigerian, or that one of the most efficient, fast, and yet cheap blood transfusion devices was also invented by a Nigerian? For these reasons, I'm proud of Nigeria, and to be identified with these people is a delight.

  • Our culture and attires: The Nigerian culture is one that I'm proud of, especially the Yoruba tribe where I'm from. I love our culture and traditions; our music is awesome; and the part of it all I love the most for me is our dressing. I'm proud of our attire, and I'm never shy about wearing it anywhere, letting everyone know I'm from that part of the world.

As regards whether my country has all it takes for me to develop into the best version of myself or to pursue any profession I wish in life, I doubt Nigeria as that; most of the basic amenities a citizen would need aren't even available, nor would a student have access to quality education; we are underpaid as workers in the country; and many more, to mention but a few. So, in a nutshell, my country doesn't have all it takes for me to develop into the status I desire.

Talking about the state of the country presently, corruption has become the order of the day, and there isn't even an assurance of where we are secured again, given the fact that there are killings in almost every nook and cranny of the country. To crown it all, we don't have freedom of speech, and neither is the future of anyone in the next minute really assured, so if I had the opportunity to leave for a better country, what will I do?

The truth is that, although I'm not the type who freaks out about leaving the country, if the opportunity arises, I'll surely grab it with both hands because I'll love to leave for a place that offers me the best of everything and where I can sleep with both eyes closed, which isn't something I can do here.

So in order to position myself for great opportunity, good living, and access to the basic amenities that make life easier, I'll surely leave the shores of Nigeria to get those things. Another reason why I'll love to leave is to position my children for a more secure future because they automatically become citizens of the new country, have access to quality education and much more and wouldn't have to bother much with or become victims of the challenges I went through.
