The weekend down here in Nigeria, especially the Ijebu axis where I'm based, is known for their love for functions, parties, and continuous outgoing generally. This has even led to the point where the people coined a name for it, and it's known as owanbe. Owanbe simply means I'm there, and to grace such events, what makes it more colorful are the clothing and the food. Today I'll be telling you my preference when it comes to dressing for Owanbe.
One unique thing about most functions down here is the fact that each function usually has a form of fabric pick that all guests can purchase, take to their stylist, and wear to the function. This usually makes the event uniform and cute. Although I'm not a fan of such acts and don't really like wearing the same type of dress as others to an event, you can imagine stepping into a place and seeing yourself putting on the same cloth with 300 other people in the same place. It's awkward, in my opinion, but sometimes I've no choice but to do that.
One thing about me, though, is that regardless of whether it has been a uniform dress or not, I love gracing this function in my traditional attire. In my opinion, these are the best forms of dressing that I enjoy a lot; I feel comfortable in them, and I think it also makes me more classic and more acceptable at such events than where I go in modern western attire.
Like I said, I prefer to dress in my native attire. Inasmuch as I'm putting on one, I'm fine and don't like to match with the uniform fabric chosen by the organizer of such functions. I might look odd to others, but it's fine with me. Aside from this, one other reason why they usually choose a uniform dress fabric is so they can give out gifts to those who brought their fabric. I've missed out on such a gift because those sharing felt I didn't buy it because I'm not putting on the fabric at the function, but on a few occasions when the organizer themselves are the ones sharing the gift, then they'll give it to me because they know I brought it but didn't put it on.
So that's all for today. I hope you enjoyed the read. Thanks for your time. Have a wonderful week ahead.
