Maize Challenge - Clearing and Harvesting Cassava in the piece of Land I Intended to Use

Good day everyone, today I'll love to take you through the piece of land i intend on planting my maize, in participation to the maize Challenge by @felixxx as shared here on his post some month ago.

Although I would have love to do the planting on my farm land located in the village where I teach on per-time, but school is presently on vacation, so I decided to use the piece of land in my backyard, where I usually do some minimal plantation of crops and herbal medicinal planting.

The size of the piece of land is a quarter of a plot of land, that's

50ft by 25ft
according to Nigeria way of measuring lands.

Most part of this piece was occupied with the cassava I planted on it since last year, so I had to first harvest the cassava by cutting it log, and pulling it out. https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/vickoly/EqL8H6fM3b7FeNNpgEDh8Df3WbcUYjzM2eQPEymgYmLKdguCmR1HyfmMai81s22ZdJS.jpg

It would have been a more bountiful harvest than this, but the farmland is frequently terrorise by rodent and goat who usually wants to get a taste of the leaves and other plant I have in the land.

This lead me into building a fence around the backyard, with old roofing pan shit and wood, before I plant the maize, I'll still need to erect some falling part of the fence, else they will invade it once again, and for the rodent, I might need to poison some food to chase them far away.

So here is my first report card in my journey for the maize Challenge, and in my next content, I'll try and add some fertilizer from a chicken poultry and as well erect the fence.

TOOLS

For this project I use less tool and more of manpower.

  • Cutlass: The cutlass is the only tool I use in cutting the log of the cassava before harvesting it, since I usually regularly uproot weeds growing around the cassava, that's why every is neat and needed no weeding.

Here I place the log of the cassava, I can't sell most of it to those who want plant cassava, and I'll be leaving some for myself in case I'll need to plant some too.

Here is the piece of land after clearing, now I'll easily proceed to the next stage of the planting. IMG_20220417_112038.jpg
