So early this morning while I was observing my daily devotion, I came across a Bible was which lead me into thinking about how good it's, to be good to others, It also lead me into reminiscing about how one of my good deals to a particular friend in his time of needs, turns out to be a door opener for me several years after.
I could remember one of those days while I was still an undergraduate in the university, I sat in my room thinking about how I'm going to survive with the last money I had with me then, which was 200 naira, the money is not even enough to get me a decent food that'll fill my stomach for the night, not to talk of the remaining days of the month, since I had earlier called my father to inform him about my financial needs and he thoroughly explained that I'll need to manage what I've, hustle and try to take care of myself, because he as not been paid 6month salary and the person he borrowed from to pay my school fees is now chasing about for refund.
I was short of words, and devastated, and after critical thinking, I decided to first use the last money to eat from a buka(local road side restaurant), but along my way to the buka, I guy about my age, stop me and pleaded to have a some minutes of my time, we move to an angle of the basement and he pleaded with me, that he's very hungry, he said it's been over a day since he last ate anything, since he was unable to get any help during the day, he decided to sleep to reserve his strength and beg during the night.
I told him I'm not the best person to help him, as I'm also about to spend my last money, without any hope of getting any, but I pitied him, cause obviously his case was more worst than mine, I still ate my last food stuff in the morning, so I showed him my last money while is 200 naira, I gave him 100 naira from the money, and had to buy Garri and drink Garri as my last meal for that day.
The funny thing is that I've never seen him before then and won't recognise him if I set my eyes on him again, but fortunately for me, after a week, this guy located me and introduce himself to me, he told me, his parent later send him money and food stuffs and now he as enough, so he decided to share some of it with him for being so kind to him despite my plights.
I later got to know that he was a cultists, and that non of his gang help him during those trying period, but because of my kind gesture, he ditch their cultists group and started attending the church I attended then, and this was the Bible verse that came to my mind then;
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. - Matthew 5 : 16
After we graduated and went our different ways, this friend was still the one who recommended me to his uncle who employ me after I was wandering about job hunting throughout the street of Lagos.
With the happening and my ordeals I just narrated, I believe you'll all agreed with me that it's good to do good to others, we should let the light of God radiate in our life, and as well help those in need, because one way or another, by so doing, we would have hit a string within that person, and we could one day be at the mercy of such person to breakthrough or get to the next phrase of our lives.
Though that doesn't mean you should only help people because you hope to get something back in return, but because you truly care about humanity, and helping others will make the world and our community at large a better place.
Just take for instance that I didn't help that guy then, as a cultists that he was then, he could have resolted into stealing or harming others just to put meet his needs, but thank God I helped him, another scenario is that, had I not helped him, he might not have had a change of heart and left the bad gang he was following, and neither would he have help me get a job then.
So in conclusion, be mindful of the needs of those around you, if you have enough, then try and lift a soul today, you good deals of today, will turn around to be the good of everyone around you,and thereby make the world a place worthy of bringing our unborn generation.
