I REGRETTED SPEAKING THE TRUTH;

Even though lying is not a quality that everyone should possess, there are times in our lives when we have to state the truth in the hopes that things would turn out well. However, when they don't, we are left wishing we had told a different story about the entire incident and how it turned out.

I have been in a situation like that before, and I must admit that I was very disappointed in myself for speaking the truth. The least I expected was to be applauded for speaking the truth despite the risk and potential harm it could cause me in my community as a whole, but instead I received harsh punishment.

What actually occurred, how did it turn out, and how did my anticipated outcome stack up against what actually occurred are the topics I'll be referring to below.

The incident occurred when I was in secondary school. A few of my friends and classmates were planning to do something terrible to the farmland of one of our teachers, who usually assigns us the duty of working on his farmland outside the school grounds during school hours. They were planning on destroying some of her plantation, and despite my efforts to persuade them to take the situation in another form by reporting to the school principal, they turned a deaf hear to my advice.

I tried to talk to the teacher about what was going to happen that day, but she sent me away from her office because she was meeting with our other teachers. I persisted in saying that I needed to see her, and what I got in return was being spanked, so I left. The following day, the damage had already been done, and one of the nearby farmers who witnessed my classmates inflicting the damage had informed our teacher about it, so she reported us to the principal.

When we were called to the assembly and asked to explain what had occurred, my classmates eventually admitted guilt after being threatened. However, as they prepared to punish us, I stood up and said, "I can't get punished for what I didn't do," and I also mentioned how I had attempted to alert the teacher to the danger and how she had kicked me out. Despite these statements, I was still punished more severely than everyone else because they believed I should have tried all means to inform her no matter her reaction.

This angered me so much because it damaged my reputation among my classmates and I believed they didn't encourage telling the truth by punishing me. I told my father about it, and he was furious with how the teachers handled the situation. He threatened to report them to the higher authority but eventually relented after they admitted their wrong doing and begged him not to report them.

It was a very difficult incident to accept that I received 10 whippings for speaking the truth while the actual offenders only received 5 floggings. The incident changed my perspective on speaking the truth, and I'm sure you won't hold me entirely responsible because I then wished I had joined my colleagues in acting as if nothing had actually happened.

I appreciate you sticking with me all the way to the end, and I hope it was worthwhile. This article was based on a community feature topic chosen by the @hive-learners earners, and you can read @kronias post to learn more about it.

Have a blessed, relaxing and refreshing weekend experience.
